Bruxism and clenching, as one of the characteristic habits for developing a CMD, most likely lead to structural damage to bones, muscles, fascia, and nerves, usually in a shorter period. A frequent lack of a state-of-the-art diagnosis and incorrect treatment inevitably leads to a vicious circle of suffering from which, unfortunately, too few patients are able to free themselves.

An "incorrect bite", which primarily concerns the position and vertical relation of the bite, leads to a misalignment in the temporomandibular joint and often overstimulates the nerves in the inner ear and causes ringing sounds or beeps in the inner ear. Dizziness possibly occurs along as a further symptom. Subsequently, it leads to a change in the position of the skull on the cervical spine, which can lead to herniated discs, numbness in the extremities, tension headaches, and vertigo if left untreated
